Alberta diesel prices

Alberta is the cheapest province for diesel in almost every Natural Resources Canada print, and the usual explanation is wrong. In the survey dated 11 August 2026 Alberta averaged 200.4¢/L against Ontario's 211.5¢/L, an eleven-cent advantage. Yet Alberta's provincial fuel tax is 13 cents per litre and Ontario's is 9 cents. On the headline rate, Alberta is the higher-taxed province.

Two things account for the gap, and neither is the fuel tax rate. The first is sales tax. Alberta charges 5 per cent GST on fuel where Ontario applies 13 per cent HST, and because sales tax is levied on the price rather than the litre, it compounds every other cost in the chain. On a fill approaching two dollars a litre, that difference is worth substantially more than the four-cent gap in fuel tax, which runs the other way.

The second is proximity to supply. Alberta produces crude and refines it, with major capacity around Edmonton, and no Alberta market is far from a terminal. That shows up in the spread rather than the average. Alberta's six survey cities ran from Edmonton at 196.8¢/L to Red Deer at 202.6¢/L, a range of 5.8 cents. Ontario's nineteen cities spanned 23 cents in the same print. A province where every market is close to supply has tightly-bunched prices; one where some markets are 900 kilometres from the nearest terminal does not.

Alberta's rate is also the least predictable in the country. The province ties its fuel tax to the price of West Texas Intermediate crude: the tax is suspended entirely when oil sits at or above US$90 a barrel, drops to a partial rate between US$80 and US$89.99, and is fully reinstated below US$80, reviewed every quarter. That means an Alberta diesel price can move several cents on a quarterly tax decision with no change in the underlying commodity. It was suspended for all of 2023 and fully reinstated on 1 April 2024. Anyone budgeting Alberta fuel cost a quarter ahead is forecasting an oil price, whether they realise it or not.

One caveat on every figure here. The NRCan survey measures posted retail, not cardlock. If you run a fuel card, your actual cost is usually lower than the posted average, so use your card price rather than this number for planning a specific fill.
